The Navy Whaler
A piece of Australian Navy history, saved by a heritage donation.
The Navy Whaler was originally built at Garden Island by Navy apprentices, then allocated to the Navy ship store. From our research she is one of twelve built, and a sister to the one on display at the Brisbane Maritime Museum.
She was purchased by Bulls Boat Yard in Metung, Victoria, in early 1970 and later sold to Jack of Paynesville, Victoria. Jack modified the old boat into a lakes cruiser and enjoyed many years cruising the Gippsland Lakes.
In 2000 Mr Eric Marsh and his wife acquired the old Whaler from Jack, and she underwent an extensive restoration. On completion, the family had lots of enjoyment sailing the Gippsland Lakes for around 10 years. In 2010 the old girl sank in her pen because of some rot in the stern. She was salvaged and transported to a family-owned factory in Melton, Victoria, with the intention of restoring her to her original glory.
The Whaler was craned inside the factory and placed in a solid cradle, ready for restoration. Eric and his son were very passionate about the old boat. Unfortunately, the family's business changed hands and they had nowhere to house her.
The family made a greatly appreciated heritage donation of the Whaler to the Victorian Maritime Centre. They are very pleased she is in good hands and that a piece of Australian Navy history can be saved.
